I saw males within bewitching females,

who appeared to me between Salʿ and Ḥājir.

So I addressed males, because I had seen them

as men, through a true and recurring unveiling.

And they were females who had borne realities

from the Spirit—an imparting associated with the surah Ghāfir.

And their husband is the Spirit whom I have mentioned,

and they range between one who forbids and one who commands.

They are the knowers, deaf as a rampart; and do not say

that the one who has come is not well-informed.

And he singled out no kind to the exclusion of another, because he

saw the matter flowing through the small and the great.

And do not doubt what I say, for I

have come upon knowledge from the surging sea.

I sipped it as sweet water, yet it

is indeed salty and bitter in the rainy years.

So whoever is a thinker, you see him bewildered,

and whoever follows sacred law is not perplexed.

I wished for the good fortune of seeing a believer,

ever-truthful, one of the young men, not an unbeliever.

And that is the one who comes in a merchant's form,

rich with profits, not a loser.

So I saw only one shedding a libertine's robe,

and I saw no one wearing a rogue's garb.

Things have taken diverse forms, yet the matter is one,

and one absent is not like one present in receiving from him.

If the unseen of the unseen holds true, whatever belongs to a present matter

is beheld by my heart, my intellect, and my eye.
