عجبتُ لمن قد كان عينَ هويتي

عجبتُ لمن قد كان عينَ هويتي

ويشهد لي بالنقص عينُ مزيدي

I marveled at the one who was the very essence of my identity.

I wonder at one who was the eye of my identity

And the very essence of my increase bears witness to my deficiency.

فما أدري ما هذا ولستُ بجاهل

وقد عرفتني بالأمور حدودي

So I do not know what this is, though I am not ignorant.

So I know not what this is, and I am not ignorant

And my limits have indeed acquainted me with things.

For you have made known to me the limits of my affairs
