I marveled at a sea without a shore,

And a shore that has no sea,

And a forenoon that has no darkness,

And a night that has no dawn,

And a sphere that has no place,

    Known to the ignorant and the scholar;

And a green dome, raised up,

    Moving, its point is overpowering might;

And pillars that have no dome

Nor any place—the secret is hidden.

I sought a secret in marriage [remainder unclear: 'not with other than it; be!'].

Then it was said: Has thought driven you love-mad?

So I said: I have no power—so be gentle—

Over it in existence, nor patience.

For through thought, whenever it settles

In my mind, the embers blaze,

And all becomes a conflagration, so no

Even number is seen within it, nor an odd one.

Then I was told: None plucks its blossoms

Who says, 'Gently! I am free.'

Whoever wooed al-Khansāʾ in her secluded chamber,

Love-stricken, was not deterred by the dowry.

I gave her the dowry and gave her in marriage,

In my night, until dawn appeared.

Then I found none but myself—so who is it

That I gave in marriage? Let the matter be considered.

For within the sun's light have been enfolded

The shining moon and the bright stars.

Like time, reviled; yet there spoke one

Whom your Lord has blessed: 'Time.'
