تضلعتُI drank my fill منof شربa draught رويّthirst-quenching بلاwithout شُربِdrinking
كماjust as أننيthat I أشتهيI yearn إلىtoward القلبِthe heart منfrom قلبيmy heart
I have drunk my fill of a thirst-quenching draught without drinking.
I'm drunk with drinking from a cheek though my lips are dry,
Just as I yearn, from my heart, toward the heart.
As I yearn for a heart from my heart,
فإنَّfor indeed لمقلوبيfor my reversed heart جمالاًa beauty يخصُّهbelongs specifically to it
أهيمI am love-crazed بهfor it وجداًin passionate longing علىin البعدdistance والقربِand nearness
For my reversed heart has a beauty all its own.
For my beloved has a beauty special to him -
I am mad with longing for it, in distance and nearness.
I rave with passion for him, whether far or near.
أبيتُI spend the night أناجيهI commune with it بنوميin my sleep ممثلاًrepresented in an image
وإنيand indeed I إذاwhen استيقظتُI awaken عدتI return إلىto صحبيmy companions
I spend the night communing with it in my sleep, in imagined form.
I talk to him in my sleep acting out our love,
And when I awaken, I return to my companions.
And when I wake I return to my companions.
فإنْthen if كانit is عنfrom بَينٍseparation فشوقٌthen longing مجدَّدٌrenewed
وإنْand if كانit is عنfrom وصلٍunion فحسبيthen enough for me إذاthen حسبيenough for me
If it comes from separation, then longing is renewed.
If we're apart, yearning renews; if together,
And if it comes from union, then enough for me—then, enough for me.
I'm content when contentment comes my way.
فإنْthen if جادَit bestows generously بالتمثيلِwith representation in form فيin حالِthe state of يقظتيmy wakefulness
فذلكthen that أحلىsweeter ليto me منthan المورِدthe water-source العذبِsweet
If it bestows an image while I am awake,
If he indulges me by acting in my waking state,
then that is sweeter to me than the sweet-water source.
That's sweeter to me than fresh sweet water.
إذاwhen ماever (emphatic) رأيتُI see الدارَthe house أهوىI long for دخولهاentering it
ولكنbut علىupon الأبوابِthe doors أرديةcloaks أعجبI marvel
Whenever I see the house, I long to enter it.
When I see his house I crave entering,
But upon the doors are cloaks—I marvel.
But at the door are robes more wondrous.
ومنand from خلفهاbehind them البوّابُthe doorkeeper يسمعhe hears وطأتيmy footfall
فيغفلso he is heedless عنيof me للذيbecause of what بيis in me منof عُجْبself-conceit
And from behind them the doorkeeper hears my footfall.
Behind it is a gatekeeper who hears my footsteps
So he ignores me because of the self-conceit within me.
And pays no heed to me in his wonder.

Like a threshold growing arrogant from being
he attains within it a share in dwelling together in nearness.

هيshe الأمّthe mother سماهاHe named her ذَلولاًdocile لخلقهfor His creation
وقدand indeed أعرضتshe turned away عنيfrom me كإعراضlike the turning away of ذيone with ذنبa sin
She is the mother; He called her docile for His creation.
It's the Mother - he named it compliant toward his creation,
And she has turned away from me like one guilty of sin,
Yet it turned from me like one who's sinned,
حياءًout of modesty وأعطتناand she gave us مناكبَthe shoulders of نظمهاher ordered structure
فنمشيso we walk بهاupon them عنby أمرthe command of خالقهاher Creator الربِّthe Lord
out of modesty, and she gave us the shoulders of her ordered form.
Modestly giving me her braids to walk by,
So we walk upon them at the command of her Creator, the Lord.
So I walk by my Lord's command.
إذاif كانis حالُthe state of الأمِّthe mother هذاthis فإننيthen indeed I
لأولىsurely more entitled بهto it منهاthan she إلىuntil انقضاthe ending of نحبيmy allotted life
If this is the mother's state, then I
If this is the Mother's state, then I
surely have more claim to it than she, until my allotted life ends.
Am more deserving than her until my love is done.
تمنيتُI wished منهfrom Him أنْthat أكونَI might be بحالهاin her state
معwith اللهGod فيin عيشٍa life هنيءpleasant بلاwithout كَربdistress
I wished of Him that I might be in her state,
I wished from him to be in her state,
with God, in a pleasant life without distress.
In a life of ease with God, without distress,
فياتيthen comes وجوديmy being للدعاوىfor claims بصورةٍin a form
تنزلهplaces it منيin relation to me كمنزلةِlike the station of الربِّthe Lord
Then my being comes forth, to make claims, in a form
So my existence comes making claims
that gives it, in relation to me, a station like the Lord's.
That would bring him down to the status of my Lord.
وهيهاتِand far from it! أينَwhere الحقُّthe Real منfrom حالِthe state of خلقهHis creation
بذاwith this جاءتِcame الأرسالthe messengers منهfrom Him معwith الكتبِthe scriptures
Far from it! How far the Real is from the state of His creation!
Alas! How far is the truth from the state of His creation,
With this came the messengers from Him, together with the scriptures.
When His scriptures have been sent with His messengers?
لقدindeed أوردتْrelated نفسيmy soul حديثاًa report مُعنعناًwith an 'on the authority of' chain
عنon the authority of الرُّوحِthe Spirit عنon the authority of سريmy innermost secret عنِon the authority of اللهGod عنِon the authority of قلبيmy heart
My soul has indeed related a report linked by 'on the authority of':
My soul has plunged me into intricate tales
From the Spirit, from my innermost secret, from God, from my heart:
Of the spirit, my secret, God and my heart,
بأنَّthat indeed وجوديmy being عينهHis very essence وهويتيand my identity
هويتهHis identity فاركبْso ride علىupon مركبٍa mount صَعبdifficult
That my being is His very essence, and my identity
Saying that my existence is His essence and my identity
is His identity—so ride upon a difficult mount.
His identity. So set sail on a rugged ship!
فلمso there did not يبقremain فيناin us مفصَلٌa joint فيهin it قوّةٌa power
أشاهدهاI witness it وإلاand except that وعينهاand its very essence ربيmy Lord
So no joint remains in us endowed with a power
Nothing remains in us with strength
that I witness without its very essence being my Lord.
I can witness unless through His eye.
فكيفَthen how لناfor us وقدwhen indeed صحَّhas proved true مُخلصٌa sincere one
ويعتبنيand he reproaches me وقتاًat times فأعجبُso I marvel منat عتبيmy being reproached
How, then, can it be ours, when a sincere one has proved true?
How can this be when a loyal friend has come
And he reproaches me at times, so I marvel at my being reproached.
And sometimes reproaches me, and I wonder at his reproach!
وإنَّand indeed لهfor him حدَّثtold المبرءُthe absolver نفسَهhimself
دليلاًa proof لهfor him فيماconcerning what ذكرتُI mentioned منof العُتْبِreproach
And indeed he has—the absolver told himself—
Speaking truth, the self has provided evidence for itself
a proof on his behalf in the reproach I mentioned.
Regarding what I mentioned of reproach:
ألاbehold إننيindeed I عبدٌa servant لمنto the one whom أناI ربُّهhis lord
فضىunclear; possibly 'gave judgment' بالذيقدaccording to what already قلتهI said it فيin الهوىpassion حبيmy love
Behold, I am a servant to the one whose lord I am.
"I am the servant of Him who is my Lord -
My love [gave judgment?] in accord with what I have already said of passion.
The passion I spoke of was my love for Him."
