How often we saw you, though you were unaware of us,

when you were yourself, and you were not I.

God knows that I am the servant of the one

who, whenever he said 'I,' was I.

Thought wandered lost in him because of his inaccessibility,

seeking to see what is seen only through us.

So whenever I said, 'Grant me a glimpse,'

he said, 'I will not, so long as you remain here.

Vanish, and you will see what you seek

of my existence through you—a beautiful sight.'

Indeed, my heart is my heart's eye; so look:

you will see what I said as a clear dawn.

I am not among those who drank knowledge through it

as honey; rather, it was a preparation of milk.

So when he supplied me a chain of transmission for what he claimed

from revelation's texts, he narrated through 'on the authority of':

The heart related on the spirit's authority, just as

the heart related to us on God's authority:

'I am your eye; so look at what you see.'

Thus he gave the explicit text concerning it, without speaking indirectly.
