1. كم رأينا برامةَ

    من طلولٍ ودارسِ

    How often have we seen at Rāma

    traces of dwellings and effaced remains!

  2. ما رأينا من غادةٍ

    في الجواري الأوانس

    We have seen no graceful maiden

    among the charming young women

  3. مثلَ لبنى إذا أقبلت

    نحونا من غدامس

    like Lubnā, when she came

    toward us from Ghadames.

  4. خِلتُها حين أقبلت

    قطعةً من جنادس

    I thought her, as she approached,

    a fragment of deepest night—

  5. صورةً ما أرى لها

    صورةً في الكنائس

    an image for which I see no

    likeness in the churches.

  6. إنما حرَّك الهوى

    اهتزاز النواقس

    Love was stirred only

    by the ringing of the bells.

  7. قلتُ مَن أنت إنني

    خالطتني وساوسي

    I said, 'Who are you? Indeed, I

    have been beset by my misgivings.'

  8. قالت أعلم بأنني

    من حِسان الفرادس

    She said, 'Know that I

    am among the beauties of the paradises.

  9. لستُ إنساً لكنني

    مظهر للنوامس

    I am not human, but I am

    a manifestation of the sacred laws.

  10. وأنيسي الذي أرا

    ه أنيسي مجالسي

    And my intimate, whom I see,

    is my intimate, my companion at gatherings,

  11. ظاهر أويق تحته

    في صدور المجالس

    manifest—[unclear word]—beneath him,

    in the foremost seats of gatherings.

  12. أنا من كلِّ زينة

    رقمت في الملابس

    I am part of every adornment

    embroidered upon garments.

  13. ما يرى حسن زينتي

    منكم غير لابس

    No one sees the beauty of my adornment

    among you but one who wears it.'

  14. أنا من حبها كما

    قيل في حرب داحس

    Through love of her, I am as

    was said in the war of Dāḥis.

  15. قلتُ مني على فتى

    طامعٍ فيك آيس

    I said, 'Show favor to a youth

    who hopes for you, yet despairs.'

  16. قالت أعلم بأنه

    في الهوى غيرُ سائس

    She said, 'Know that he

    is no master in love;

  17. ودليلي إظهارُه

    ما به من وساوس

    and my proof is his revealing

    the misgivings within him.'
