God is too exalted to be seen by inner sight,

or by eyesight; yet the text speaks of seeing.

And nothing is seen but Him, and He

in every state is the very essence of my self and my measure.

For that reason, He is called Manifest and Hidden to us,

so that I may affirm or deny; the names are my eyes.

So never be dismayed: the matter and the affair are one,

and pay no heed to my wealth and my poverty.

For I am the very essence of the matter, if you are wealthy,

yet I am not its essence in my hardship and destitution.

Behold, my eye is indeed a witness, and my testimony

is likewise so, in what is sound among my reports concerning Him.

I have indeed affirmed kinship between me and Him,

and those bound by kinship are more entitled to my destinies.

    I am His prison, from Him, when I am mercy;

and if my mercy is absent, then my abode has indeed grown distant.

Behold, I am indeed a neighbor to the one who is my form,

and it has been stated: the neighbor's right is a duty upon the neighbor.

Thus He has affirmed the likeness that He had negated for me

with 'not'; and at that my thoughts were bewildered.

    When I say 'a likeness,' He says 'No,' so I say 'No';

and if I say 'No,' I remain a captive to my burdens of sin.

So He is no part of me, nor am I all of Him,

and there is no whole but what the Creator brought into being.

And when my created form appeared to my eye, I saw myself

through His most beautiful names and seven walls.

And I am nothing but His bounty and His existence,

and indeed, my traces are what appear to your eye.

    وأين مع التحقيقِ عينٌ لأغياري

    He is exalted beyond partaking of anything but His own existence;

and where, in true realization, is any being other than me?

When I rise to praise—and praise is His speech—

then I am not profuse in the praise I have offered.

When my eye beholds the beauty of His existence,

I become, through Him, in that state, a bearer of lights.

And if I see nothing but myself, then I

am indeed a knower of my time through myself, and a possessor of secrets.

But if ever what I have mentioned persists in me,

then that, in true realization, establishes the harms I suffer.
