God is greatest, yet not in the sense of “greater than,”

unless He is the very essence of all created beings.

And He may be so, but in the eyes of a group

whose excellence the people of understanding have not acknowledged.

They are the great ones; you do not know their aims,

and one beholds nothing of them but their shadow.

The Real effaced them from Himself when

the souls were effaced through Him; so He was exalted and banished their abasement.

Had they looked with His eye, they would have been worshipped

by them, though in a form other than their own.

The people worship no self but one,

too exalted to be seen by any but their like.
