    Every sovereign rises above all common folk,

    When he inhabits the lengths and stills the breadth.

    وينعدمُ التكليفُ إن فارق الأرضا

    And that is only here, through effort;

    And obligation vanishes if he leaves the earth,

    To the Garden of Refuge, in his sensory form,

    And there is no shadow there, even though it has breadth.

    You think you see people, yet they are not as you see them.

    And they have no likeness other than jerboas.

    Their hearts are like the jerboa's concealed escape-hole, for a wise purpose,

    Though they differ from the jerboa in constitution and shape.

    For they have two faces at the root of their creation:

    Thus one face is toward separation, and one toward union.

    وما هو هجوٌ جَلَّ عن هجومهم مثلي

    And this is praise that tells of a truth;

    And it is not invective; one such as I is above attacking them.

    ولكنَّ ذا الأفضال يمتاز بالفضل

    Nor am I absent from what I have mentioned;

    But the possessor of merits is distinguished by merit.

    فإنَّ مثال الشخصِ يظهر بالظل

    And I have said only what I have confirmed to be so;

    For a person's likeness appears in the shadow.

    And the peoples know that I have a form,

    With which I was endowed through the bounty of special favor above all others.

    So, O soul, bestow your generosity upon a young man,

    Who has placed you all, through poverty, in the station of the origin.

    So if he is not worthy, then you are worthy.

    And by coming, he is none other than one of the worthy.

    And no being, for its essence alone, deserves

    Any praise or invective without a deed.
