ألا إنني العالم الأبخلُ

ألا إنني العالم الأبخلُ

بديني وسرِّي فلا أكرم

بديني وسرِّي فلا أكرم

Behold, I am the most miserly scholar,

Indeed, I am the world's most stingy

with my religion and my secret, so I give nothing.

With my religion and secret, so I do not honor

وما ذاك بخلٌ ولكنه

وما ذاك بخلٌ ولكنه

هو الفضلُ والكرم الأكرم

هو الفضلُ والكرم الأكرم

And that is no miserliness, but rather

And that is not stinginess, but rather

it is grace and generosity at its noblest.

It is the greatest honor and generosity

انزل منزلة كلما

انزل منزلة كلما

تحقق علمي الأعلم

تحقق علمي الأعلم

I descend to a station whenever

I descend to every position

my supreme knowledge is realized.

That my supreme knowledge requires

أنا الشمسُ أبدو بذاتي إذا

أنا الشمسُ أبدو بذاتي إذا

أشاء ويظهرني الأزمم

أشاء ويظهرني الأزمم

I am the sun; I appear through my own essence when

I am the sun, I show myself whenever

I wish, and “al-Azmam” (an unclear term) makes me manifest,

I want, and the horizons make me visible

إذا شئت ذاك لما يقتضي

إذا شئت ذاك لما يقتضي

مقامي ويظهرني الأنجم

مقامي ويظهرني الأنجم

when I wish that, as required by

Whenever I want, as required

my station; and the stars make me manifest

By my status, the stars make me visible

إذا ما دجا الليل من غيبتي

إذا ما دجا الليل من غيبتي

ويفقدني العالم المظلم

ويفقدني العالم المظلم

when the night grows dark from my absence,

When night falls from my absence

and the dark world loses me.

And the dark world misses me

إذا لبست خِرقتي ذاته

إذا لبست خِرقتي ذاته

تحار لها العربُ والأعجمُ

تحار لها العربُ والأعجمُ

When its essence dons my patched cloak,

When I wear my patched garment

the Arabs and non-Arabs are bewildered by it.
