لِطَيبَةِat Tayba ظَبيٍa gazelle ظُبىblade-edges صارِمٍof a keen sword
تَجَرَّدَwas drawn bare مِنfrom طَرفِهاher gaze الساحِرِenchanting
At Tayba, a gazelle has the edges of a keen sword,
For a gazelle with stern, gazing eyes
Drawn bare from her enchanting gaze.
That captivated with her charming look
وَفيand at عَرَفاتٍArafat عَرَفتُI recognized الَّذيwhat
تُريدُshe desires فَلَمso not أَكُI was بِالصابِرِpatient
And at Arafat I recognized what
In Arafat I knew well what she wanted
She desired, and so I was not patient.
Yet I could not be patient
وَلَيلَةَand on the night جَمعٍof Jamʿ جَمَعناwe gathered بِهاwith her
كَماas جاءَwas said فيin المَثَلِthe proverb السائِرِwidely current
And on the night of Jamʿ we gathered with her,
And on the eve we gathered as told
As the familiar proverb says:
In the well-known parable
يَمينُthe oath الفَتاةِof the maiden يَمينُis false فَلاso do not
تَكُنbe تَطمَئِنُّtrusting إِلىtoward غادِرِa betrayer
The maiden’s oath is false, so do not
A girl’s oath is an oath so do not
Put your trust in a betrayer.
Trust the treacherous

Wishes I attained at Mina—would that they
I got her wishes one by one if only
Would last until the final age.
They would last till the end of time
تَوَلَّعتُI became enamored فيat لَعلَعٍLaʿlaʿ بِالَّتيof her who
تُريكَshe shows you سَناradiance القَمرِof the moon الزاهِرِshining
At Laʿlaʿ I became enamored of her who
I craved the one whose radiant smile
Shows you the radiance of the shining moon.
Shows you the full moon's splendor
رَمَتshe made for رامَةًRama وَصَبَتand she yearned بِالصَباwith the east wind
وَحَجَّرَتِand she hardened الحَجرَthe stone بِالحاجِرِat al-Hajir
She made for Rama and yearned with the east wind,
She flirted, then poured with morning draught
And hardened the stone at al-Hajir.
And stoned the rock with a stone
وَشامَتand she watched بَريقاًa flash عَلىabove بارِقٍBariq
بِأَسرَعَmore swiftly مِنthan خَطرَةِa passing thought الخاطِرِof the mind
And she watched a flash above Bariq,
She smiled at a flashing light swifter
Faster than a thought passing through the mind.
Than a fleeting thought
وَغاضَتand dwindled مِياهُthe waters الغَضاof al-Ghada مِنbecause of غَضىًghada embers
بِأَضلُعِهِwithin its ribs مِنfrom هوىًa love ساحِرِenchanting
And al-Ghada’s waters dwindled because of ghada embers
Waters of anguish flowed from her sorrow
Within its ribs, kindled by an enchanting love.
For her love of a charming man
وَبانَتand she departed بِبانِby the ban-trees النَقاof al-Naqa فَاِنتَقَتthen she chose
لِآلِىءَpearls مَكنونَةِhidden الفاخِرِof the splendid one
And she departed by al-Naqa’s ban-trees, then chose
She appeared with the posture of a gazelle
Hidden pearls of the splendid one.
Picking precious pearls
وَأَضلَتand she lost بِذاتِat Dhat الأَضاal-Ada القَهقَرىthe way back
حِذاراًfor fear مِنَof الأُسدِthe lions الخادِرِlair-dwelling
And at Dhat al-Ada she lost her way back,
She wandered in the barren valley
For fear of the lions lurking in their lairs.
Beware of the slumbering lion
بِذيat Dhu سَلَمٍSalam أَسلَمَتshe surrendered مُهجَتيmy heart
إِلىto لَحظِهاher glance الفاتِكِdeadly الفاتِرِlanguid
At Dhu Salam she surrendered my heart
With peace she surrendered my passion
To her deadly, languid glance.
To her deadly languorous glance
حَمَتshe guarded بِالحِمىat al-Hima وَلَوَتand she turned بِاللَوىat al-Liwa
كَعَطفَةِlike the turn جارِحِهاof her bird of prey الكاسِرِfierce
She guarded at al-Hima and turned at al-Liwa,
She inspired with passion and twisted with craving
Like the wheeling of her fierce bird of prey.
Like her raptor's crushing embrace
وَفيand at عالِجٍʿAlij عالَجَتshe dealt with أَمرَهاher situation

لِتُفلِتَso she might escape مِنfrom مَخلَبِthe talon الطائِرِof the bird
And at ʿAlij she dealt with her situation,
And in curing her affair she strove
To escape from the bird’s talon.
To escape from the claw of the bird

Her Khawarnaq pierces the sky,
Her slender neck rising to the sky
Rising high above the beholder.
Transcends the beholder's sight
