    And night is the night of desire and nature when it envelops.

    Then day is the day of reason and disclosure.

    When I recall garments I used to wear

    for religion, recalling them reminds me of scratching.

    And I am not blind, for I possess radiance and understanding.

    Nor am I clear-sighted, but I am dim-sighted.

    والشرعُ يحكم أني أغرم الأرشا

    For nature disdains having it divulged against it;

    and sacred law rules that I must pay compensation for injury.

    So judgment comes from me against myself, not against anyone else.

    So I hope in none but myself—no, nor do I fear anyone else.

    For if you touch it, you find softness, and within it is

    deadly venom, as though I were the speckled serpent.

    This is what I alone have been singled out for; by it I mean

    the human species at the time of its beginning and creation.

    فكلُّ ما نحن فيه ربنا أنشأ

    Our formation was founded upon the image of the Names;

    thus every state we are in was brought into being by our Lord.

    Nor did messengers conceal it when conveying it to us,

    because their Sender is the One who disclosed it.

    And had He kept it secret, permissibility would have testified on my behalf

    that He—glory be to Him—had indeed willed it thus.
