Ah, the anguish of my liver! Ah, the anguish!

Ah, the rapture of my heart! Ah, the rapture!

In my liver is a scorching fire of longing.

In my heart, a full moon of the dark night has set.

O musk, O full moon, and O bough of a sand dune!

How leafy, how radiant, how fragrant!

O smiling mouth, whose pearly teeth I loved!

And O saliva, whose white honey I tasted!

O moon in a twilight blush of modesty,

On his cheek, he shone before us, veiled.

Were he to lift his face-veil,

It would be torment; that is why he veiled himself.

A morning sun, rising in a celestial sphere,

A bough of a sand dune, planted in a garden.

I remained trembling in fear of her,

And the bough—I water it with pouring rain.

    أَو غَرَبَت كانَت لِحَيني سَبَبا

    If she rises, she is a marvel to my eye;

Or if she sets, she is a cause of my death.

Since Beauty fastened upon the parting of her hair

A crown of unwrought gold, I have loved gold.

    Had Iblis seen in Adam

[The light of] her countenance upon him, he would not have refused.

Had Idris seen what was inscribed by

Beauty upon her cheeks, he would not have written.

    Had Bilqis seen her coverlet,

Neither throne nor palace would have crossed her [mind].

O spreading tree of the valley, and O ban-trees of al-Ghada,

Give us some of your fragrance with the east wind,

Musk-scented, its perfume wafting to us,

From the blossoms of your hollows or the blossoms of the hills.

O ban-tree of the valley, show us a branch

With the suppleness of her limbs—or slender shoots.

An east wind tells of a time of youth

At Hajir, or at Mina, or at Qaba,

    Or at an-Naqa, then al-Munhana beside al-Hima,

Or at La'la', where the gazelles graze.

No wonder, no wonder, no wonder,

    That an Arab should passionately love the Arabs;

He fades away whenever a ringdove sings

In remembrance of the one he loves, in rapture over him.
