تجملُ لمن قال الرسولُ بأنه

تجملُ لمن قال الرسولُ بأنه

يحبُّ الجمالَ الكل فهو جميل

يحبُّ الجمالَ الكل فهو جميل

Adorn yourself for Him of whom the Messenger said

He is beautiful to whom the Prophet said

that He loves all beauty, for He is beautiful.

That he loves all beauty, so he is beautiful

فذلكم الله النزيه جمالُه

فذلكم الله النزيه جمالُه

عن الغرض النفسيِّ فهو جليلُ

عن الغرض النفسيِّ فهو جليلُ

That, then, is God, whose beauty is untainted

That pure God, his beauty

by self-serving purpose; He is majestic.

Is above all selfish motive, so he is glorious

تعالى جمالُ الله عن كلِّ ناظرٍ

تعالى جمالُ الله عن كلِّ ناظرٍ

إليه فطرفُ المحدثاتِ كليلُ

إليه فطرفُ المحدثاتِ كليلُ

God's beauty is exalted beyond every beholder

God's beauty is far above any onlooker

of Him, for the eye of created things is dim.

So the new comers' eyesights are deficient

فليس له من كلِّ وجه مماثلٍ

فليس له من كلِّ وجه مماثلٍ

وليس له في المحدثاتِ عديل

وليس له في المحدثاتِ عديل

Thus none resembles Him in every respect,

He has no equal from any aspect

nor has He an equal among created things,

And among the new comers he has no match

سوى من بدا بالكافِ في قوله لنا

سوى من بدا بالكافِ في قوله لنا

بترجمة الشورى فليس يزول

بترجمة الشورى فليس يزول

save the one revealed by the kāf in His words to us

Except the one whose name starts with K (Kaf) as He told us

under the title al-Shūrā; he does not pass away.

In translating Al-Shura so he does not disappear

لقد جهدت نفسي بأنك عينه

لقد جهدت نفسي بأنك عينه

فتسرح في أرض الهوى وتجول

فتسرح في أرض الهوى وتجول

My soul has indeed grown weary, for you are His very self,

I tried hard that you are His essence

so it roams in the land of love and wanders.

So you roam in the land of passion and wander

يطالبني الأنت الذي عين الأنا

يطالبني الأنت الذي عين الأنا

وما لي سوى هذا عليه دليل

وما لي سوى هذا عليه دليل

The 'You' that is the very 'I' makes demands of me,

The self that made the ego asks me

and I have no proof of it but this.

And I have no evidence for it but this

تجول براهين النهى في مجالها

تجول براهين النهى في مجالها

وأوّل شخصٍ حال فيه جليل

وأوّل شخصٍ حال فيه جليل

The proofs of reason roam within their domain,

The proofs of prohibition roam in their realm

and the first figure that moved within it is majestic.

And the first eminent person in it is glorious

علمت بأنَّ الأمر بيني وبينه

علمت بأنَّ الأمر بيني وبينه

وإن الذي يدري به لقليل

وإن الذي يدري به لقليل

I knew that the matter lay between me and Him,

I learned that the matter is between me and Him

and indeed those who know it are few.

And that the one who knows it is little

وإن كان لي وجه يكون هويتي

وإن كان لي وجه يكون هويتي

به عينه جاء المُحال يقولُ

به عينه جاء المُحال يقولُ

And even if I have an aspect—my identity being

And if I have an aspect that is my identity

through it His very self—the Impossible came, saying:

Through it, the absurdity comes saying

تثبت فليس الأمر فيه كما ترى

تثبت فليس الأمر فيه كما ترى

فعما قليلٌ ينقضي ويحول

فعما قليلٌ ينقضي ويحول

'Take heed, for the matter here is not as you see;

Be steadfast, for the matter is not as you see

for soon it passes away and changes.'

In a little while it will be negated and changed

فقلت له مهلاً عليَّ فإنني

فقلت له مهلاً عليَّ فإنني

علمتُ به والعارفون نزول

علمتُ به والعارفون نزول

So I said to him, 'Gently with me, for I

So I said to him, wait, for I

have known Him, and the knowers alight

Learned about Him and the knowers are few

عليه من الأكوانِ في كلِّ جحفل

عليه من الأكوانِ في كلِّ جحفل

له في مجرَّاتِ الشهود ذيول

له في مجرَّاتِ الشهود ذيول

upon Him from created worlds, in every great host

About Him from all existence in every multitude

that has tails in the galaxies of witnessing.'

For Him in the galaxies of witnessing are tails
