كوكب قال بتنزيه نفسهِ

كوكب قال بتنزيه نفسهِ

فرماه العجبُ في سجنِ رمسِهِ

فرماه العجبُ في سجنِ رمسِهِ

A star proclaimed his own transcendence.

A planet in self-glorification said,

So conceit cast him into the prison of his grave.

So wonder cast him in a prison of chalk.

طلعتْ حكمة مولاه ليلاً

طلعتْ حكمة مولاه ليلاً

لمحياه فأودَتْ بنفسه

لمحياه فأودَتْ بنفسه

His Lord’s wisdom rose by night

The wisdom of his Master at night appeared,

Before his face, and brought his self to ruin.

To give him life, so with herself she did away.

فشكا الكوكبُ وجداً وشوقاً

فشكا الكوكبُ وجداً وشوقاً

لسناها عند أبناء جنسه

لسناها عند أبناء جنسه

So the star lamented his ardent love and longing

The planet complained with yearning and ardour,

For her radiance, among the sons of his kind.

For the companionship of the sons of his kind.

قيل ما حكمة هذا محبّ

قيل ما حكمة هذا محبّ

جاءكم يرغبُ وصلاً بخمسه

جاءكم يرغبُ وصلاً بخمسه

It was said: What is the wisdom of this? A lover

It was said: “What wisdom is with this lover?

Has come to you, seeking union through his five.

He desires and asks for a union in fives.”

قبضتها وأتت في حلاها

قبضتها وأتت في حلاها

نحو باريها وحطَّت بقدسه

نحو باريها وحطَّت بقدسه

She gathered them and came in her adornments

She took him and came in her adornment,

Toward her Creator, and alighted in His sanctity.

Towards her Maker, and landed on His Holiness.

ودعته فأتاها مجيباً

ودعته فأتاها مجيباً

يا محباً يشتهيها لنفسه

يا محباً يشتهيها لنفسه

And she called Him, so He came to her in answer:

She called him, so he came answering,

O lover who desires her for himself,

“O lover, who desires her for himself!”

اشكر الله على كل حال

اشكر الله على كل حال

ابنتي ليلك هذا بعرسه

ابنتي ليلك هذا بعرسه

Thank God for every circumstance.

Thank God in every state,

My daughter, this night of yours is for his wedding.

My daughter, your night is with its wedding.
