Winter has come, and I have no fur coat.

And the bitter cold is a foe that cannot be repelled or driven back.

And when winter comes and I have no fur coat,

You find that every amulet is of no use.

So, by your glory—my most solemn oath—

And your generosity, a defense against every calamity,

Indeed, I spend the night hungry, my belly empty,

Famished, while the curves of my ribs rattle.
