There is now no way to earn a living

among people except prostitution and lies.

Our sultan is lame, and his secretary

is blear-eyed, and the vizier is hunchbacked.

And the man in charge has a savage temper,

and the army's muster-master has a strange ailment:

he lies awake at night from an itch

that blazes in his anus like a raging fire.

And the Muslims' judge has no

desire for anything but a black man's penis.

And al-Dawlaʿī, the preacher, is in retreat,

while he leaps upon an eggshell.

And Ibn Bāqā uses his preaching to deceive the peo-

ple, and ʿAbd al-Laṭīf is a market inspector.

    A people's faults—if they were gathered

in a celestial sphere, no shooting stars would pass through it.
