تَعَجَّبَmarveled قَومٌsome people لِصَفعِat the slapping of الرَشيدِal-Rashid
وَذلِكَand that مازالَhas continued to be مِنpart of دابِهِhis custom
Some people marveled at al-Rashid being slapped,
And that has always been his custom.
رَحِمتُI pitied اِنكِسارَthe breaking of قُلوبِthe hearts of النعالِthe sandals
وَقَدand indeed دَنَّسوهاthey sullied them بِأَثوابِهِwith his clothes
I pitied the sandals’ broken hearts,
For they had sullied them with his clothes.
فَوَاللَهِfor, by God ماnot صَفَعوهُthey slapped him بِهاwith them
وَلكِنَّهُمbut they صَفَعوهاslapped them بِهِwith him
For, by God, they did not slap him with them,
But they slapped them with him.
