No wonder al-Muʾayyad has become, among
It is no wonder that Al-Mu'ayyad has become
the people, lovelorn and besotted with ʿUmar.
Among the people morning rain poured generously by Omar

Salmān of al-ʿAmīd’s household excuses
Salman of the Emir's house excuses their evil
ill-treatment, and if they treat him well, he gives thanks.
And if they are good to him, he is thankful

The concerns of all are focused on him, so he is
of Moses; each of them has a need for him.
Moses’ staff for each of them, their only recourse

Meeting him in burning anguish and frustration

In the morning he lies spread beneath men,
He awakes under men as a
a female; by evening he is above women, a male.
Woman, and sleeps above women as a man

How many burdens they loaded on him
a towering calamity—yet he endured.
As provender - so he was patient

He is pliant of limb, perforated of nose
open: there is no place in him for semen to lodge.
In him there is no place for incontinence

And when his men weaken him
their women take a first draught from him, and he departs.
Their women draw from him and are sated
