ظَنَنتُI thought سُلَيماناًSulayman جَواداًgenerous يَهِزُّهُmoves him

مَديحيmy praise وَتُستَجدىand are solicited بِسِحريthrough my magic مَواهِبُهhis gifts
I thought Sulayman generous, moved
by my praise, and his gifts solicited through my magic.
رَأَيتُI saw لَهُon him زِيَّthe garb of الكِرامِnoble men فَغَرَّنيso it deceived me
كَماjust as غَرَّdeceived آلٌa mirage مَوَّهَتهُmade it seem watery سَباسِبُهits desert plains
I saw him in the garb of noble men, and it deceived me,
as a mirage deceives, made to seem like water by its desert plains.
دَخَلتُI entered عَلَيهِinto his presence وَهوَwhile he فيin صَحنِthe courtyard of دارِهِhis house

I entered his presence in the courtyard of his house,
on a dais upon which his cushions had been set.
فَلَمّاthen when رَآنيhe saw me قالَhe said مَنwho? قيلَit was said شاعِرٌa poet
أَتىhe came مادِحاًoffering praise فَاِزوَرَّso turned away لِلسخطِin anger جانِبُهhis side
When he saw me, he asked, ‘Who?’ He was told, ‘A poet
has come offering praise.’ He turned his body away in anger.
وَأَقبَلَand he began يَستَكفيbegging to be spared وَسَبَّand cursed عَبيدَهُhis slaves
وَفاضَتand overflowed مَآقيهِthe corners of his eyes وَعَزّاهُand consoled him كاتِبُهhis scribe
He began begging to be spared and cursed his slaves;
the corners of his eyes overflowed, and his scribe consoled him.
فَأَنشَدتُهُso I recited to him شِعراًpoetry تَخَيَّرتُI carefully chose بَحرَهُits meter
فَرَقَّتso became delicate مَعانيهِits meanings وَراقَتand were delightful مَذاهِبُهits modes of expression
Then I recited him verse whose meter I had carefully chosen,
its meanings delicate, its turns of phrase delightful,
بَديعاًwondrous كَرَوضٍlike a meadow حالَفَتهُmade a pact with it يَدُthe hand of الحَياrain

wondrous, like a meadow with which the hand of rain made a pact,
and did not withdraw until the meadow's stars shone bright.
وَلازَمتُهُand I kept attending him عامَينِtwo years عاماًone year مُسَلَّماًconsigned
إِلىto البابِthe door أَحياناًat times وَعاماًand one year أُواظِبُهI attend him constantly
I kept attending him for two years: one year consigned
at times to the door, and one year constantly attending him.
وَبالَغتُand I went to extremes فيin الشَكوىcomplaint وَعَرَّضتُand I hinted بِالهِجاat satire
وَصَرَّحتُand I spoke outright حَتّىuntil أَعجَزَتنيoverwhelmed me مَثالِبُهhis faults
I pressed my complaints and hinted at satire,
and spoke outright, until his faults overwhelmed me.
فَماso not كانَhe was إِلّاexcept صَخرَةًa rock لاnot تُلينُهاsoften it الرthe (word continues)

He was nothing but a rock that could not be softened by the
incantation-healers, and a mountain whose sides never sway.
وَأَلَحتُand I persisted حَتّىuntil صَرَّحَspoke plainly الشِعرُpoetry قائِلاًsaying

I persisted until poetry spoke plainly, saying:
Give me rest! What can you hope for from a dead man you address?
وَلاand do not تَغتَرِرbe deceived مِنfrom بَعدِهاafter it بِحَماقَةٍby folly
وَإِنand even if عَظُمَتit is great قَدmay يَظلمُwrong التَيسَthe he-goat حالِبُهits milker
And do not let folly deceive you after this,
however great it is: a he-goat's milker may wrong it.
إِذاif المَرءُa man لَمnot يَشرُفbe noble بِنَفسٍthrough a soul كَريمَةٍgenerous

If a man is not ennobled by a generous soul
and lineage, influence will not raise his standing.

The monkey's worth did not increase when it was favored
by Yazid, nor did al-Husayn's calamities diminish him.
