آلَيتُI swore لاnot آتيI come to بُخارىBukhara بَعدَهاafter it
آلَيتُ لا آتي بُخارى بَعدَها
وَلَوand even if انَّهاthat it is فيon الأَرضِthe earth دارُan abode خُلودِimmortality
وَلَو انَّها في الأَرضِ دارُ خُلودِ
I swore I would never come to Bukhara again,
I swore never to visit Bukhara again,
Even if it were an abode of immortality on earth.
even if it were an abode of immortality on earth.
فَلَقَدfor indeed حَلَلتُI arrived بِهاin it حَنيفاًan upright monotheist مُسلِماًa Muslim
فَلَقَد حَلَلتُ بِها حَنيفاً مُسلِماً
وَرَحَلتُand I departed عَنهاfrom it بِاِعتِقادِwith the creed of يَهوديa Jew
وَرَحَلتُ عَنها بِاِعتِقادِ يَهودي
For I arrived there a true believer, a Muslim,
For I arrived there an upright Muslim,
And departed from it holding a Jew’s creed.
and departed from it with a Jew's creed.
