قَسَماًI swear بِمَنby those whom ضَمَّتembraced أَباطِحُthe gravelly valleys of مَكَّةٍMecca
قَسَماً بِمَن ضَمَّت أَباطِحُ مَكَّةٍ
وَبِمَنand by those whom حَواهُencompassed him مِنَfrom among الحَجيجِthe pilgrims المَوقِفُthe place of standing
وَبِمَن حَواهُ مِنَ الحَجيجِ المَوقِفُ
I swear by those whom Mecca’s gravelly valleys embraced,
I swear by He who the valleys of Mecca embraced
And by the pilgrims whom the place of standing gathered:
And by He who the standing pilgrims harbored
لَوif لَمnot يَقُمrise موسىMusa بِنَصرِin support of مُحَمَّدٍMuhammad
لَو لَم يَقُم موسى بِنَصرِ مُحَمَّدٍ

لَعَلا عَلى دَرجِ الخَطيبِ الأسقُفُ
Had Musa not risen to Muhammad’s aid,
Had Moses not supported Muhammad
The bishop would surely have ascended the preacher’s steps.
The bishop would have stood on the pulpit
لَولاهُwere it not for him ماnot ذلَّwas humbled الصَليبُthe cross وَأَهلهُand its followers

But for him, the cross and its followers would not have been humbled
Were it not for him, neither the cross nor its people
In Damietta’s frontier port, nor would the Qur’an have been exalted.
Would have been disgraced at Damietta nor would the Quran have been honored
