I entered upon Ibn al-Shahrazuri one night,

with the locks already shut against access to the vizier.

I beheld him, love-distraught, bedding Faysha,

and reciting to her, his cheek awash with tears:

“What could the talebearers possibly report

except that they say I am in love with you?

Yes, the talebearers spoke true: you are my beloved,

dear to me, though your disposition toward me is not sincere.”
