سَلواask صَهواتِthe backs of الخَيلِthe horses يَومَon the day of الوَغىbattle عَنّاabout us
إِذاif جُهِلَتare unknown آياتُناour signs of prowess وَالقَناand the lances اللُدناthe supple ones
Ask the horses' backs about us on the day of battle,
if our deeds are unknown—and ask the supple lances.
غداةَon the morning when لَقيناwe met دونَbefore دِمياطَDamietta جَحفَلاًa mighty host
مِنَof الرومِthe Romans لاnot يُحصىcan be counted يَقيناًwith certainty وَلاnor ظَناby conjecture
On the morning we met a mighty host before Damietta,
of the Romans, uncountable with certainty or even by conjecture.
قَدindeed اِتَّفَقواthey agreed رَأياًin counsel وَعَزماًand resolve وَهِمَّةًand zeal
وَديناًand faith وَإِنand although كانواthey were قَدalready اِختَلَفواthey differed لُسناin tongues
They had united in counsel, resolve, and zeal,
and faith, though they spoke different tongues.
تَداعَواthey called to one another بِأَنصارِfor the supporters of الصَليبِthe Cross فَأَقبَلَتand then came
جُموعٌhosts كَأَنَّas though المَوجَthe waves كانَwere لَهُمfor them سُفُناships
They called on the supporters of the Cross, and there came
hosts, as though the waves had served them as ships.
عَلَيهِمupon them مِنَof الماذِيِّfine steel كُلُّevery مُفاضَةٍample coat of mail
دِلاصٍsmooth and gleaming كَقِرنِlike the rim of الشَمسِthe sun قَدalready أَحكَمَتperfected وَضَناin weaving
They wore ample coats of fine steel, each one
smooth and gleaming like the sun's rim, its weave tightly wrought.
وَأَطمَعهُمand made them covet فيناin us غُرورٌdelusion فَأَرقَلواso they sped
إِلَيناtoward us سِراعاًswiftly بِالجِيادِon fine steeds وَأَرقَلناand we sped
Delusion made them covet us, and they sped
toward us swiftly on fine steeds—and we sped too.
فَماso not بَرِحَتceased سُمرُthe brown shafts of الرِماحِthe lances تَنوشُهُمstruck at them
بِأَطرافِهاwith their points حَتّىuntil اِستَجارواthey sought protection بِناwith us مِنّاfrom us
So the brown-shafted lances never ceased striking them
with their points, until they sought refuge with us from us.
سَقيناهُمwe gave them to drink كَأساًa cup نَفَتbanished عَنهُمُfrom them الكَرىsleep
وَكَيفَand how يَنامُcan sleep اللَيلَat night مَنwhoever عَدِمَlacks الأَمناsafety
We made them drink a cup that banished their sleep;
and how can one without safety sleep at night?
لَقَدindeed صَبَرواthey endured صَبراًwith patience جَميلاًadmirable وَدافَعواand resisted
طَويلاًfor a long time فَماbut not أَجدىhelped دِفاعٌresistance وَلاnor أَغنىavailed
Indeed, they endured with admirable patience and resisted
for long, but their resistance did no good and availed nothing.
لَقواthey met المَوتَdeath مِنfrom زُرقِblue الأَسِنَّةِspearheads أَحمَراًcrimson
فَأَلقَواso they yielded بِأَيديهِمwith their hands إِلَيناto us فَأَحسَنّاso we showed kindness
They met crimson death from the blue spearheads,
so they put themselves in our hands, and we showed kindness.
وَماand not بَرِحَceased to be الإِحسانُkindness مِنّاfrom us سَجِيَّةًan innate trait
تَوارَثَهاinherited it in succession عَنfrom صيدِlordly آبائِناour fathers الأَبناthe sons
And kindness has never ceased to be our nature,
inherited by sons from our lordly fathers.
مَنَحناwe granted بَقاياهُمtheir survivors حَياةًa life جَديدَةًnew
فَعاشواso they lived بِأَعناقٍwith necks مُقَلَّدَةٍhung with مَنّاfavor
We granted their survivors a new life,
so they lived, their necks hung with our favors.
وَلَوand had مَلَكواthey prevailed لَمnot يَأتلواspare any effort فيin دِمائِناour blood
وُلوغاًlapping وَلكِنّاbut we مَلَكناprevailed فَأَسجَحناso we showed clemency
Had they prevailed, they would not have spared our blood,
lapping it up; but we prevailed and showed clemency.
وَقَدand indeed جَرَّبوناthey tested us قَبلَهاbefore it فيin وَقائِعٍbattles

They had tested us before this in battles
in which the novice among them learned spear-thrusting from us.
فَكَمso how many مِنof مَليكٍa king قَدindeed شَدَدناwe tightened إِسارَهُhis bonds
وَكَمand how many مِنof أَسيرٍa captive مِنfrom شَقاthe misery of الأَسرِcaptivity أَطلَقناwe freed
How many a king have we bound fast in his fetters,
and how many a captive have we freed from captivity's misery!
أُسودُlions of وَغىًbattle لَولاwere it not for قِراعُthe clash of سيوفناour swords
لَماwould not رَكِبواthey have worn قَيداًfetters وَلاnor سَكَنواthey dwelt in سِجناa prison
Lions of battle—were it not for the clash of our swords,
they would not have worn fetters, nor dwelt in prison.
وَكَمand how many يَومa day of حُرٍّheat ماnot لَقيناwe faced هَجيرَهُits midday heat
بِسترٍwith cover وَقُرٍّand bitter cold ماnot طَلَبناwe sought لَهُfor it كِنّاshelter
And many a hot day whose noon heat we faced without
cover, and bitter cold for which we sought no shelter!
فَإِنَّfor indeed نَعيمَthe bliss of المُلكِkingship فيamid شَظَفِthe privations of الشَقاhardship
يُنالُis won وَحُلوَand the sweetness of العِزِّglory مِنfrom مُرِّهits bitterness يُجنىis reaped
For the bliss of kingship, amid the privations of hardship,
is won; and glory's sweetness is reaped from its bitterness.

A noble lord of the house of Ayyub leads us,
whose resolve would let no dwelling keep him still.

Noble in renown, bare of disgrace, valiant,
fair of face, perfect in beauty and goodness.
لَعَمرُكَby your life ماnot آياتُthe signs of عيسىIsa خَفِيَّةٌhidden

By your life, Isa's signs are not hidden;
they are the sun, radiant to the farthest and the nearest.
سَرىhe traveled by night نَحوَtoward دِمياطDamietta بِكُلِّwith every سمَيذَعٍnoble warrior

He traveled by night toward Damietta with every noble warrior,
highborn, who deems battle's watering-place the most delightful spring.
فَأَجلىso he drove out عُلوجَthe barbarians of الرومِthe Romans عَنهاfrom it وَأُفرِحَتand were gladdened
قُلوبُthe hearts of رِجالٍmen حالَفَتhad allied with بَعدَهاafter it الحُزناsorrow
So he drove the Roman barbarians from it, and gladdened
men's hearts, which had allied themselves with sorrow after its loss.
وَطَهَّرَهاand he cleansed it مِنof رِجسِهِمtheir defilement بِحُسامِهِwith his keen sword
همامٌa valiant hero يَرىwho deems كَسبَwinning الثَناpraise المغنمthe spoils الأَسنىthe loftiest
And he cleansed it of their defilement with his keen sword—
a hero who deems winning praise the loftiest spoils.
مَآثِرُdeeds of مَجدٍglory خَلَّدَتهاimmortalized them سُيوفُهُhis swords
لَهاfor them نَبَأa tale يَفنىperishes الزَمانُtime وَلاand not يَفنىperishes
Deeds of glory his swords have made immortal;
they have a tale: time will perish, but that tale will not.
وَقَدand indeed عَرَفَتhave known أَسيافُناour swords وَرِقابُهُمand their necks

Indeed, our swords and their necks have come to know
where those blades strike those necks; if they return, we shall return.
