وَأَهيَفَand a slender-waisted youth كَمhow many مِنof مُبتَلىًone afflicted فيهِby him قَدindeed بُليwasted away
لَهُhe has جُمَلٌcollections مِنof حسنِهِhis beauty لَمnot تُفَصَّلِbeen detailed
And a slender-waisted youth—how many afflicted by him have wasted away!
How many a tried one in it has been tried
He has a wealth of beauty never described in detail.
He has of beauty traits that were not detailed
صَبَرتُI was patient عَلَيهِwith him وَاِنتَظَرتُand I awaited زِيارَةًa visit
وَقُلتُand I said الهَوىlove يَومانِtwo days يَومٌa day لَهُfor him وَليand for me
I was patient with him and awaited a visit,
I was patient with him and awaited a visit
And I said, “Love has two days: one for him and one for me.”
And I said: love, one day is for it, and one for its companion
فَلَمso not تَكُit was إِلّاexcept مُدَّةٌa while إِذwhen رَأَيتُهُI saw him
وَعِزَّتُهُand his pride قَدalready بُدِّلَتwas replaced بِتَذَلُّلِwith abasement
Only a little while had passed when I saw him,
It was only a period when I saw him
And his pride had been replaced by abasement.
And his glory was changed with humiliation
وَأَصبَحَand he became مِثلَlike الرَسمِa ruin أَقوَتbecame desolate رُسومُهُits traces
لِماbecause of what نَسَجَتهاwove over them مِنof جَنوبِthe south wind وَشَمأَلِand the north wind
And he became like a ruin whose traces lay desolate,
And he became like a drawing whose features had faded
Because of what the south and north winds had woven over them.
Because of what the south wind and north wind had woven
فَقُلتُso I said لِقَلبيto my heart بَعدَafter ذاكَthat وَناظِريand my eye
قِفاhalt, you two نَبكِlet us weep مِنover ذِكرىthe memory of حَبيبٍa beloved وَمَنزِلِand a dwelling
So, after that, I said to my heart and my eye:
So I said to my heart after that and my companion
“Halt, you two; let us weep at the memory of a beloved and a dwelling.”
Stop! Cry over the memory of a lover and abode
