مَشتshe walked كالغُصنlike a branch يَثنِيهbends it النسيمُthe breeze
ويعدُوهand passes it by النسيمthe breeze فيستقيمُso it straightens
She walked like a branch bent by the breeze,
She walked like a branch bent by the breeze
She walked like a branch bent by the breeze,
and when the breeze passes it by, it straightens.
And the breeze straightened her and made her at ease
And when the breeze departs, it stands straight again.
لهاshe has رِدفٌa rump تعلّقis attached فيto لطيفٍa slender frame
وذاكand that الردفُthe rump ليto me ولهاand to her ظلومُcruel
She has a rump attached to a slender frame,
She has a chaperone attached to her grace
She possesses heavy hips upon a slender waist,
and that rump is cruel to me and to her.
And that chaperone tyrannizes her and me
And those hips are a tyrant to me and to her alike.
يعذّبنيit torments me إذاwhen فكّرتُI think فيهof it
ويُتعبُهاand tires her إذاwhen راحَتshe begins تقومُto rise
It torments me when I think of it,
It tortures me when I think of it
They torment me whenever I think of them,
and tires her when she begins to rise.
And tires her when she tries to stand
And they weary her whenever she moves to stand.
وماand not حُبِّيmy love لهاfor her إلّاexcept عذابtorment
عليهupon it منfrom نضارتهاher freshness نعيمُbliss
And my love for her is nothing but torment,
My love for her is but agony
My love for her is nothing but torment,
with bliss from her freshness laid upon it.
Despite the bliss of her vitality
Yet within it, from her radiance, lies bliss.
I seek protection for you ياO سُلَيمىSulayma منfrom سُلَيمٍSulaym
قتلتِyou have slain فَتاهُمtheir young man وهوand he is الكريمُthe noble one
I seek protection for you, O Sulayma, from Sulaym:
I seek refuge for you O Suleima from Suleim
I seek God's protection for you, O Sulayma, from the slayer's guilt,
you have slain their young man, and he is noble.
Who killed their youths despite his esteem
For you have killed their young man, though he is noble.
بلىindeed أنتyou الغَزالةُthe sun فيin سَنَاهاits radiance
فَرامِيهاso the one aiming at it بعيدٌfar away ماwhat يَرُومُhe seeks
Indeed, you are the sun in its radiance;
Yes you are the gazelle in her prime
Nay, you are the sun in its rising brilliance;
so what the archer aiming at it seeks is far beyond reach.
So distance yourself from those who scheme
He who aims for it seeks what cannot be reached.
وماand there is no لَكِagainst you طالبٌclaimant بتراتِfor the blood-debts of نفسيmy life
إذاwhen قتلkills الغرامُpassion فلاthen there is no غَريمُone liable
And no one pursues you to avenge my life;
Why would you seek my soul’s destruction
None shall demand vengeance from you for my soul,
when passion kills, no one is held liable.
When passion itself is the crime
For when passion kills, there is no debt to claim.
فُؤاديmy heart سارjourneyed نحوكِtoward you عنaway from ضلوعribs
بهاwithin them ياO رِيمُgazelle حبُّكlove for you ماdoes not يريمُdepart
My heart journeyed toward you, leaving the ribs
My heart floated toward you from my ribs
My heart has journeyed toward you, leaving my ribs behind,
where, O gazelle, love for you never departs.
With it, O Umayma, love will not redeem
Wherein, O gazelle, your love never ceases to dwell.
وِدادُكlove for you صحَّis sound فيin قلبٍa heart سقيمٍailing
كطَرفِكlike your gaze صحَّis sound ناظرهُits eye السقيمُlanguid
Love for you is sound in an ailing heart,
Your love revived a sickly heart
Your love is sound within a sickly heart,
like your gaze, whose languid eye is sound.
Like your glance revived his sickly beam
Just as the languid weakness is perfect within your gaze.
إذاwhen أعرضتِyou turn away تَسودُّturn black الأمانيthe hopes
وإنand if أقبلتِyou approach تبيَضُّturn white الهمومُthe worries
When you turn away, hopes turn black,
When you turn away, wishes darken
If you turn away, my hopes turn pitch black,
and if you approach, worries turn white.
And when you come close, sorrows gleam
And if you draw near, my sorrows turn white.
