ياO مُهدِيَgiver of الرَشأthe fawn الَّذيwho ألحاظُهhis glances

O giver of the fawn whose glances
O guide of the gentle breeze, whose glances
O gifter of the fawn, whose piercing glances
Left my heart a target for those arrows.
Left my heart pierced by those arrows,
Have set up my heart as a target for those arrows.
رَيحانَةa sprig of basil كُلُّall المُنىdesires فيin شَمِّهاsmelling her
لَولاwere it not for المُهيمنُthe Guardian وَاِجتِنابُand avoiding المَحرمِthe forbidden
A sprig of basil—all longing lies in breathing her scent,
A basil plant, all wishes lie in its scent,
A sweet basil—all desire lies in its scent,
Were it not for the Guardian and avoidance of the forbidden.
If not for the Protector and avoiding the forbidden,
Were it not for the Guardian and the shunning of the forbidden.
ماnot عَنout of قِلىًaversion صُرِفَتshe was returned إِلَيكto you وَإِنَّماbut rather
صَيدُhunting الغَزالةthe gazelle لَمnot يُبَحbe permitted لِلمُحرمِfor a pilgrim in consecration
Not out of aversion was she returned to you; rather,
My heart would not have turned away from you, rather
It was not out of loathing that she was turned away from you, but rather,
Hunting the gazelle is not permitted to a pilgrim in consecration.
Hunting a gazelle is not permitted for a pilgrim.
The hunting of the gazelle is not permitted to the pilgrim.
إِنّindeed الغَزالةthe gazelle قَدalready عَلِمناwe knew قَبلَهاbefore her
سِرَّthe secret of المَهاةِthe female oryx وَلَيتَناand would that we لَمdid not نَعلَمِknow
Indeed, before the gazelle we already knew
Indeed we knew of the gazelle before it
Indeed, regarding the gazelle, we knew before her time
The oryx's secret—and would that we had not known it!
The secret of passion, and would that we never knew,
The secret of the wild oryx—would that we had never known!
ياO وَيحَalas for عَنتَرَةAntarah الَّذيwho قَدalready شَفَّهconsumed him
ماwhat شَفَّنيconsumed me فَشَداso he sang وَلَمand did not يَتَكَلَّمِspeak
Alas for Antarah, who had already been consumed
Oh woe to you Antara, whom it has healed,
O pity for Antara, who was consumed by that
By what consumed me; so he sang and did not speak:
What did not heal me and only caused more pain without speaking,
Which has consumed me; so he sang out and did not merely speak.
ياO شاةdoe ماwhat a قَنصquarry لِمَنfor whoever حَلَّتshe is lawful لَهُto him

“O doe, what a quarry for him to whom she is lawful!
Oh ewe, what was hunted for he who made you
O prize of the hunt for him to whom she is lawful,
She is forbidden to me—and would that she were not forbidden!”
Forbidden to me, would that you were not made forbidden.
She is forbidden to me—would that she were not forbidden!
