Dispel the drunkard’s drowsiness with wine,

and serve Yahya, our elder, a large cup

of choice wine that winds a necklace of pearls

around itself, interspersed with gold beads.

It was old when Time lay in a mother’s lap—

a mother who favored it with kindness and reverence.

    Time’s nurses have strained it,

leaving a little of what was much.

I achieve nothing in describing it

except to confess that I fall short.

So when the cup comes round, it brings two things:

    aged choice wine and joy.

Yet the choice wine is seen by the eye,

while this is seen with the mind’s eye.
