People are appalled by strife that engulfed

a people and brought them to ruin.

    وَليَعجَبِ النَّاسُ مِن أَبي خَلَفِ

    Let people not marvel at its changing course;

let people marvel instead at Abu Khalaf.

Had he resolved to kill God's servants, he would not

    wake remorseful for killing them.

He kills whom he wishes, however he wishes; and if

warned of dire punishment, he feels no fear.

He denies God not through interpretation and doubt,

but with the denial of one who acknowledges Him.

O killer of inviolable lives, and O

devourer of the orphan's wealth with reckless excess!

    And oath-swearer, oath-breaker, persisting in oath-breaking

defiantly, and reviler of the forebears!

Who will kill people if you perish, and who

will be there for the horses, bright swords, and short lances?

I see death in the narrowing of your eyes,

looking down upon me from a height.

    ما الحَظُّ في قَتلِ غَير مُنتَصِفِ

    I adjure you by God not to shed my blood with impunity;

what gain is there in killing one who has no redress?

Were beauty, forbearance, and reason perfected in you,

and were you among the noble,

you would be ʿIjl's foremost youth—not

Murra among them, nor Abu Dulaf.

Blessed is he who finds with Abu Khalaf

    a spacious watering-place and shelter,

    clicking his heels in play,

gently—though there is no harm in doing it roughly.
