Oh, may I die before you! How long

will it be before you ride out?

When I seek you, why is it,

my lord, that I cannot find you?

My share of you has dwindled,

and your share of me has dwindled.

    فَاذكُر خطوبا تَنوبُك

    Today trouble has befallen me;

so remember troubles that befall you.

    And my trouble was lodged

    where your troubles once lay.

For your fault is my fault,

and my fault brings you shame.

And today I have a guest

who will make you wail at length:

    one of the unkempt sort—never

will your physician cure you of him.

    فَكَيفَ يُروى حَبيبُك

    And I have no wine;

how, then, will your beloved's thirst be quenched?

If you do not grant me a flask—

then my Lord will hold you to account—

    of wine; for the best

wine, to my taste, is your raisin wine.

My soul said to me, when

your riding out had long lagged behind its wishes:

“Leave what makes you doubt, and turn

to what does not make you doubt.

    If Salih were among those

who love you or find you pleasing,

he would have answered your call; but

I think he will not answer you.”

So I said, “O heart, do not let

your liar deceive you about him.

    The lad is indeed noble,

and your noble one does not go unnoticed.”

Then he said, “Nothing comes to completion

while your watcher sleeps through it.”

So I said, “I was mistaken, until

    your pockets answered with counsel.”

Then he said, “Describe to me something

about him, for I will answer you.”

    So I found nothing

in which your faults would disappear.

    I ask God's forgiveness—except

a nose upon which you ride.
