يَقولُsays ليto me الخلّانُthe friends لَوif only زُرتَyou visited قَبرَهاher grave
يَقولُ لي الخلّانُ لَو زُرتَ قَبرَها
فَقُلتُso I said وَهَلand is there? غَيرَother than الفُؤادِthe heart لَهاfor her قَبرُa grave
فَقُلتُ وَهَل غَيرَ الفُؤادِ لَها قَبرُ
My friends say to me, “If only you would visit her grave.”
The tavern-keeper says, "If you visited her grave-"
So I said, “Has she any grave other than my heart?”
I said, "Does she have any grave but my heart?"
عَلىat حينa time when لَمnot أَحدُثI was young فَأَجهَلso I would be unaware of فَقدَهاher loss
عَلى حين لَم أَحدُث فَأَجهَل فَقدَها
وَلَمand not أَبلُغI reached السِّنِّthe age الَّتيwhich مَعَهاwith it الصَّبرُpatience
وَلَم أَبلُغ السِّنِّ الَّتي مَعَها الصَّبرُ
At a time when I was not so young as to be unaware of her loss,
While I have not spoken of her loss, nor felt it,
Nor had I reached the age that brings patience.
Nor reached the age when patience comes.
