أَضحَت خَلاءً ما بِها آهِلُ
Many a house, after its flourishing,
A home was inhabited after being built,
has become desolate, with no inhabitant in it.
Then it became empty with none dwelling in it.
لَمnever تَدخُلِentered البَهجَةُjoy دارَhouse اِمرِئٍa man

إِلَّا وَما يَهدِمُها داخِلُ
Joy has never entered a man's house
Happiness never entered a man's home,
without that which destroys it entering too.
Except that which destroys it was inside.

None trusts the world and its days
None feels safe from this life and its days after me,
after me, except a witless ignoramus.
Except the one ignorant of what will come.
