ليI have إِلَيكُمtoward you كَبِدٌa liver مَقروحَةٌwounded
وَفُؤادٌand a heart طائِرُtaking flight القَلبِthe heart خَفِقْfluttering
For you, I have a wounded liver,
My wounded liver, heart fluttering free
and a fluttering heart, its core taking flight.
Each time towards your abode I flee
كُلَّماwhenever دَلدَلتُI dangled خِصيَيَّmy two testicles إِلىtoward
دارِكُمyour house قَلَّصmade shrink خِصيَيَّmy two testicles الفَرَقْfear
Whenever I dangle my testicles toward
My legs recoil, the distance far too long
your house, fear shrivels my testicles.
My soul whispers of your robes, a melancholy song
حَدَّثَتنيtold me النَّفسُthe soul عَنof خُرقِكُمyour roughness
بيtoward me فيin السَّعيstriving وَفيand in السَّعيstriving خُرُقْfolly
My soul told me of your rough treatment
Seek only that I come, you say
of me in striving—and in striving there is folly.
Yet if I manage, how will I stay?
إِنَّماonly تَطلبُyou ask أَنْthat آتيَكُمْI come to you
فَإِذاthen when صِرتُI arrived إِلَيكُمto you فَلتَطِقْthen endure
You ask only that I come to you;
A beating, a bitter drink, my lap the waste
then, once I reach you, endure!
I've held back as all men, unable to taste
دَأَباًincessantly تَضرِبُنيyou beat me أَوor أَشرَبُI drink الthe
كَأسَcup أَوor تسكبyou pour فيinto حجريmy lap بُقْa mouthful
You beat me incessantly, or I drink the
Your comforts. Yet you grant asylum, allow
cup, or you pour a mouthful into my lap.
Me dice, races, though I lose each round
فَتَقاعَستُso I hung back كَذاlikewise كُلُّevery فَتىyoung man
سامَهُimposed on him إِخوانُهُhis companions ماwhat لَمdid not يُطِقْhe could bear
So I hung back, like every young man
Hear my words though sense or nonsense spill
whose companions imposed on him what he could not bear.
Rise when I rise, sit when I sit still
فَأَجَدّواso renew ليfor me أَماناًa pledge of safety وَاِذنواand permit
لِيَfor me فيin النَّردِbackgammon وَفيand in وَضعِputting down السَّبَقْthe stake
So renew a pledge of safety for me, and allow
Choking down your spit though it may stick
me to play backgammon and lay down the stake.
Woe to you all if I speak and you contradict
وَإِذاand when ماever قُلتُI said شَيئاًsomething فَاِنصِتواthen listen
باطِلاًfalse إِنif كانَit is أَوor إِنif كانَit is حَقْtrue
And whenever I say something, listen,
The truth I tell, admitting it's not so
whether it is false or whether it is true.
وَإِذاand when قُمتُI stood up فَقومواthen stand up وَإِذاand when

And when I stand, stand; and when
I wish to sit, gather round in groups.
لِيَرُدَّlet him send back المَرءُthe man مِنكُمamong you ريقَهُhis saliva
فيinto مَجاريthe passages of الحَلقِthe throat حَتّىuntil يَختَنِقْhe chokes
Let each man among you send his saliva back
down the passages of his throat until he chokes.
ثُمَّthen وَيلٌwoe لَكُمto you إِنif أَنتُمُyou
قُلتُI said شَيئاًsomething لَمdid not تَقولواyou say ليto me صَدَقْhe spoke truly
Then woe to you if you,
when I say something, do not tell me, 'He spoke truly!'
