As her strides stretched far apart, she seemed

a snub-nosed bull, dappled-legged, grazing on the heights.

A night of the Sharatayn stars came upon him,

pouring over him shower after shower.

Night drove him to a mound of damp earth,

with bitter cold within it, bearing death and dread.

He draws loose earth toward him with his two hooves,

mingling slowness and languor with haste.

As though he wore a Coptic linen robe,

its spare cloth wrapped about his head, or enfolding him.

He roamed, seeking dusky pasture that was favored

by the two Simak stars' rain, a roaring downpour.

If he suspects a sound, he sends toward it

a scout that searches the edges of the paths,

from his two ears, whose hearing draws forth

    from stillness movements that stir.

He took fright at floppy-eared hounds watching him,

    gaunt as the arrow-selector's shafts.

A dust-gray, bare, shabbily clad man runs with them,

no herder of sheep or camels.

he resembles what I likened him to, except for his feet.

They surrounded him, and he veered away, running ahead of them.

They strained in their running; then he strained too.

Until, when they nearly caught him, his rush was turned

by his own resolve and an ardor that never failed.

He wheeled among them in a sideways sweep,

piercing the foremost dogs' flanks with his two horns.

As though he were a Persian's son, aiming

a thrust at his opponent with a straight, quivering spear.

He left them toppling onto their noses,

dying, and darted away like a streaking star.

Such was she, after weariness upon weariness, when already

her swift trotting had lasted long—not her lingering urination.

to a halting place, a place to visit, and an abode.

What a place to visit, to halt, and to abide

for one afraid, or a hopeful seeker of prosperity!

its columns, and a refuge against the hardships of changing fortunes.

The drawn sword of the Commander of the Faithful,

From a band through whom God delivered us,

and Islam stood firm after stumbling.

Pure in root and branch, it has

two boughs swaying on a mountain's flank.

On either flank of kingship, together they defend

religion's sanctity and the messengers' inheritance.

I swear by God a truthful oath,

while pale camels traverse the unbroken waste:

surely your speech is the speech that cures blindness,

and your judgment the judgment that straightens crookedness.

You are the hand of kingship with which struck

    God's caliph in an hour of fear;

and religion's rocky height, and guidance's champions,

and truth's safeguard, and horsemen amid routed ranks.

And givers of bounty before being asked,

    and givers of bounty when bounty is requested;

and kindlers of war as it is being quenched,

and its quenchers while it hurls flames.

Your illustrious forefathers, whose grandsire was

Kisra Anushirwan, slake the spears' thirst

from every crowned ruler who, when resolved, presses

forward toward his aim—and if he speaks, acts.

Where, then—nowhere!—and where are your equals,

when you are kings and the people servants?
