وَإِنِّيand indeed I لَأَلقاهاI surely meet her فَيَنطِقُthen it speaks طَرفُهاher gaze
لِطَرفيto my gaze بِماof what يَخفيit conceals وَإِنeven if لَمnot تَكَلَّمِshe speaks
And indeed I meet her, and her gaze speaks
Her eyes speak to mine of hidden passions
to mine of what it conceals, though she does not speak.
Though her lips never part in speech
وَتَبخَلُand she withholds عَنّيfrom me بِالسَّلامِwith a greeting وَعَينُهاand her eye
تُشيرُsignals بِهِwith it نَحويtoward me وَإِنeven if لَمnot تُسَلِّمِshe greets
And she withholds a greeting from me, while her eye
She denies me her greetings, yet her eyes
signals it toward me, though she does not greet me.
Gesture towards me, though no salutations pass
بِنَفسِيَwith my life as ransom إِنسانٌa person إِذاwhen غابَhe is absent لَمnot أَزَلI cease
أَلاحِظُI gaze at عَينَيهِhis eyes بِعَينِwith the eye of التَوَهُّمِimagination
I would give my life for one: when he is absent, I never cease
When a loved one is gone, still I see
gazing at his eyes with the eye of imagination.
His eyes in mine, envisioned by my longing
سُرورٌjoy وَحُزنٌand sorrow فيهِover him يَعتَوِراننيthey visit me in turn
فَأَقطَعُso I spend يَوميmy day بِالبُكاin weeping وَالتَّبَسُّمِand smiling
Joy and sorrow over him visit me in turn,
Joy and sorrow stir within me
so I pass my day in weeping and smiling.
And I pass my days between tears and smiles
