And how could I change, O my hope,
How can I turn away, O my hope,
When every good I gain comes through you?
When all good I gain comes from you?

You disapproved of something; I am not its doer,
If you forbid a thing, I'll not do it,
Nor will you see it written in your books.
Nor will you see it written in your books.

If any folly has reached you from me,
If ignorance came to you from me,
Then bestow on me kindness born of your refinement.
Return it with your grace and manners.
وَاعفُand pardon فَدَتكَmay they ransom you النُّفوسُthe souls عَنconcerning رَجُلٍa man

And pardon—may souls be your ransom—a man
May souls ransom you from one
Who lives until death under your noble patronage.
Who lives until death by your reckoning.
