Ah, to God I appeal: she broke her promise to me,

and shunned me, leaving me bereft of my heart.

Is my reward from him in whose two hands I placed

my reins and my lead, to follow his desire,

that he shunned me after union, though he had been

my life, my desire, and my sure guidance?

I praise God, Lord of Majesty, for the burning

of my eye, my anguish, and my sleeplessness.

Qasf cut me off—[allotted] to my doom—

after union, like a cruel, hostile foe,

while the fire of passion upon this heart of mine

blazed over it with burning heat.

She changed my health to sickness, and my sound judgment

to delusion, and hastened my ruin.

She left me pining for her, crazed with love,

sleepless, never savoring the taste of slumber.

She left me as though within my eyelid

and upon my bedding lay the thorns of qatad.

She left me wounded until death.

She left me raving of her and crying out.

She left me unable to stir,

downcast in spirit, a spectacle in my land.

How long, how much longer shall I say: if she appears to me,

I shall say, 'Strive for union until the Day of Calling'?

But whenever she appears, my color changes

because of my misery, and becomes like ash.

And I see she has unjustly brought against me—

may her peers be her ransom—a written charge.
