أَسيدَناO our master قَدindeed وَرَدتُمyou came بِناwith us
أَسيدَنا قَد وَرَدتُم بِنا
مَوارِدَwatering places كَنّاwe were عَلَيهاaround them نَحُومwe hover
مَوارِدَ كَنّا عَلَيها نَحُوم
O our master, you have brought us
O our master, you have brought us
to watering places around which we once hovered.
To watering places around which we used to hover.
نَبَذتُمyou cast aside مَقالَةthe claim of هَذاthis one وَذاand that one
نَبَذتُم مَقالَة هَذا وَذا
فَزالَso ceased المِراءُthe wrangling وَقَلَّand grew fewer الخُصومthe disputants
فَزالَ المِراءُ وَقَلَّ الخُصوم
You cast aside the doctrine of this man and that,
You cast aside the claim of this one and that,
so disputation vanished and opponents grew few.
So wrangling ceased, and disputants grew few.
وَأَثبتُّمُand you upheld قَولَthe words of منthe one who لَفظُهhis speech
وَأَثبتُّمُ قَولَ من لَفظُه
هُوَit الحَقّthe truth وَالشَرعُand sacred law مِنهُfrom it يَقومarises
هُوَ الحَقّ وَالشَرعُ مِنهُ يَقوم
And you upheld the word of one whose utterance
And you upheld the words of him whose speech
is truth, and through him the Sacred Law stands.
Is the truth, and from it sacred law arises.
فَلاso may ... not زِلتُمyou cease لِكَمالfor the perfection of الهدىguidance
فَلا زِلتُم لِكَمال الهدى
وَإِحياءِand the revival of دارِسwhat has faded دَرسthe study of العُلومthe sciences
وَإِحياءِ دارِس دَرس العُلوم
May you never cease perfecting right guidance
May you ever remain to perfect guidance
and reviving the neglected study of the sciences.
And revive what has faded of the study of the sciences.
