مَعَرَّتكمْ إلى مصرينَ تُعْزى

مَعَرَّتكمْ إلى مصرينَ تُعْزى

فخلِّ معرةَ النعمانِ قِسْمي

فخلِّ معرةَ النعمانِ قِسْمي

Your Maʿarra is ascribed to Misrin;

Your acquaintance with the two Egypts* is praiseworthy,

So leave Maʿarrat al-Nuʿman as my share.

So set aside the acquaintance of al-Nu‘man as my share.

لقد حظيَتْ معرَّتُنا بعلمٍ

لقد حظيَتْ معرَّتُنا بعلمٍ

وتلكَ معرَّةٌ مِنْ غيرِ علمِ

وتلكَ معرَّةٌ مِنْ غيرِ علمِ

Our Maʿarra has indeed been favored with learning,

Our acquaintance has certainly been blessed with knowledge,

While that is a disgrace without learning.

While that is an acquaintance without knowledge.
