ألاindeed فيin سبيلthe cause of المجدِglory ماwhat أنتَyou فاعِلُdoing
Your holy struggle is accepted, and your year lies ahead.
Your struggle is accepted, and your year is rewarding,
Indeed, all that you do is in the cause of glory.
But will you not struggle for the sake of glory?

فمالَكَso you have no فيin هذاthis وهذاand this مماثلُequal
You fight your foes with the spear [reading uncertain] and with the pen;
You struggle for luck but fate lies with the enemy,
In neither do you have an equal.
So why bother with this, for this is all the same.

Joy upon your return from a blessed struggle,
Congratulations on a blessed return from holy war,
Sufficing for the people and assuring them the gardens of Paradise.
Sufficient for people are heavens and its fulfiller.

When our lord settles in a land, there too settle
When our Master comes to a land he comes to possess,
Chastity, courage, resolve, and bounty.
Chaste, brave, decisive, successful he comes.

And if the black of his script appears upon the page,
And if his black script shows in paper,
Darkness says, ‘O dawn, your hue is fading.’
The night says to dawn your color is obscuring.

The tall brown lances have bowed before your pens,
For your dark brown pens humility came,
And swords have feared you within their scabbards.
And towards their sheaths hastened the swords.

You encamped before the fortress whose approaches were impregnable,
You descended upon the mighty fortress,
And cared not whom calamities might destroy.
So no longer care who the calamities befall.

You set snares against it for the siege,
You brought down on it siege equipment,
As snares were set for the two Farqad stars.
As traps were brought down on ferocious lions.

You shook it with terror and awe,
You shook it with fear and dread,
And even Radwa at its heaviest was lighter than the burden it bore.
So it started favoring less than it can carry.

Indeed, an army that conquers al-Naqir
Behold an army opening victory for the young falcon
Surely achieves what those of old could not.
Coming with what no previous ones could.

How often the tekfur recited: ‘O fortress, do not fret,
So how much did the infidel Taqfur sing "Oh impregnable fortress do not crumple”
Even if the tribes glare fiercely at you.’
And if he looked with longing to you, the tribes.

It answered him: ‘Be silent! You have not seen what I see.
He said to him "Silence! You have not seen what I see,
The least of my desertion is that I am leaving you.
And it is easiest for me to turn away from you".

Have you not seen what their assault has brought upon me?
“Have you not seen what has befallen me from their fighting
I have no fault save my loftiness and merits.’
And I have no fault other than my superiority and virtues”.

From the siege’s oppression it became like
So he became from the injustice of the siege as if he were
A fallen man, or a limping one forcing himself onward.
A brother of falling or rising aggression.

You hurled catapult stones upon them,
You pelted them with the stones of the mangonel,
And pebbles and boulders vied in glory with shooting stars.
So the pebbles, rocks and bricks took pride.

Stones of baked clay—the full moon fears them
Stones of Sijil before which the moon is apprehensive
For its own safety, while the star sinks in the west.
About itself, and the star in the west is leaning.

You returned, and at the clear victory rejoiced—
You returned and to the evident conquest hastened,
Though shattered against armored men—the spearheads.
And the capabilities were broken among the armored ones.

Combat with the polytheists has blunted your swords,
Your swords made the polytheists’ fighting disperse,
So the sword is nothing but its sheath and carrying-straps.
For the sword is none other than its sheath and conception.

By my life, al-Naqir was indeed unassailable,
By my life, Taqfur was an obstacle,
And whoever reached for it fell short of attaining it.
And reaching him falls short for the reaching ones.

It was the greatest fugitive from Islam,
And he was the greatest apostate from Islam,
So it was bound fast, until even its rising was labored.
So he was tied up until his standing was heavy.

It rebelled, so Altunbugha sought its conquest, reciting:
He craved so he craved the opening of conquest,
‘And, O soul, be earnest, for your time is jesting.’
And O soul be resolute, your time is fleeting!

Then the impregnable fortress recited to him: ‘You have taken possession of me,
The mighty fortress sang to him "I possessed you,
Even were I lodged above the two Simak stars.
Even if above the highest of heights you descend".

Your fine endurance diminished my height before you,
And your beautiful patience made my length seem short before you,
And at the utmost limit, the towering one falls short.’
And before infinity, even the lengthening falls short.
