حتى وهى فكري وكلَّ لساني
You have put me to shame with your repeated kindness,
You have embarrassed me with your constant kindness
until my thought grew feeble and my tongue faltered.
Until it occupies my thoughts and every tongue

I had been thirsty for honor and glory
until I found support with Banu Rayyan.
Until I relied on the sons of Rayyan

So I came to be considered for offices and eminence:
So I became one who is mentioned for authority and height
these are the benefits of companionship with notables.
These are the benefits of befriending the eminent

Were it not for the beauty of religion I would not be mentioned even if
I were a second al-Shafi‘i.
I were to be the second Shafi'i

Whatever came from him owes its existence to you,
Whatever is from him is indeed from your existence and his virtues
and from the roots the branches spring.
Are branches whose roots are principles

With magnanimity derived from you I took example
yours comes first, and he is its second abode.
It is the first and he is the second abode

And when God wills to spread a virtue
And if God wills the dissemination of virtue
that lay folded away, He raises up for it a leader of the age.
He folds it up and establishes for it the leader of an era

You continue to support those who attain praiseworthy deeds
