بني الورديِّ أخطأتَ الرميَّهْ

If you say that the gourd resembles

When you claim the pumpkin narrates

the sons of al-Wardi, you have missed the mark.

Among pink roses, you miss the mark

فإنَّ القرعَ ذو عمرٍ قصيرٍ

فإنَّ القرعَ ذو عمرٍ قصيرٍ

وإنَّ الوردَ شوكتُهُ قويَّهْ

وإنَّ الوردَ شوكتُهُ قويَّهْ

For the gourd has a short lifespan,

For pumpkin lives a short while

and the rose’s thorn is strong.

Yet the rose's thorns are strong
