قالوا تجدَّر مَنْ تهوى فطلعتُهُ

قالوا تجدَّر مَنْ تهوى فطلعتُهُ

كالبدرِ مِنْ فوقِهِ سمطانِ منْ لولو

كالبدرِ مِنْ فوقِهِ سمطانِ منْ لولو

They said, “The one you love has contracted smallpox; his face

They said, "Wall yourself from whom you love." So I walled myself,

is like the full moon, with two strands of pearls upon it.”

Like the full moon above it is the sultan made of pearls.

فقلتُ ما هو في الأعراضِ أجمعِها

فقلتُ ما هو في الأعراضِ أجمعِها

إلا أغنُّ غضيضِ الطرفِ مكحولُ

إلا أغنُّ غضيضِ الطرفِ مكحولُ

So I said, “In all his outward qualities, he is nothing

So I said, what is in all physiques

but a sweetly nasal-voiced beloved, with downcast gaze and kohl-lined eyes.”

Other than the most charming downcast glance made tender.
