قالوا تجدَّرَ منْ تهوى فطلعتُهُ

قالوا تجدَّرَ منْ تهوى فطلعتُهُ

كالبدرِ مِنْ فوقِها سمطان منْ لولو

كالبدرِ مِنْ فوقِها سمطان منْ لولو

They said: the one you love has contracted smallpox; his countenance

They said, "Draw the veil from her whom you love." I drew it away,

Is like the full moon, with two strands of pearls over it.

And she shone like the full moon unveiled from clouds above.

فقلتُ ما هوَ في أعراضِ عدَّتِهِ

فقلتُ ما هوَ في أعراضِ عدَّتِهِ

إلاَّ أغنُّ غضيضُ الطرفِ مكحولُ

إلاَّ أغنُّ غضيضُ الطرفِ مكحولُ

I said: amid the manifestations of his equipment [wording unclear], he is nothing

Then I said, "What is there in the splendor of her face unveiled

But one softly nasal-voiced, with downcast gaze and kohl-darkened eyes.

But the brightest, blackest-eyed one, casting down her lovely eyes?"
