  1. فأحفظَهُ هذا الكلامُ وغاظَهُ

    وأنشدني في صدِّهِ وازوِرارِهِ

    So these words provoked him and angered him.

    And in his turning away and aversion, he recited to me:

  2. دمشقُ كما كنتَ تَسَمَّعُ جنَّةٌ

    ألمْ تَرَها محفوفةً بالمكارِهِ

    Damascus, as you used to hear, is a paradise;

    Have you not seen it surrounded by hardships?
