فراقُكَseparation from you للأجسادِto bodies مُفْنٍannihilating ومتلفُand destructive
وبُعدُكَand your distance للأكبادِto livers مضنٍexhausting ومُضْعِفُand weakening
Separation from you wastes and destroys our bodies;
Your absence kills our bodies bit by bit
and your distance exhausts and weakens our livers.
And your distance pains our hearts more and more

تصدُّyou turn away عنِfrom الهاديthe guide إليكَtoward you وتصدفُand you turn aside
For what offense, or for what crime,
By what sin or what crime
do you turn away from one who guides others to you, and shun him?
Do you block the way to you and object?

We had hoped to be rewarded for our devotion
We hoped to be rewarded for our love of you
to you many times over, for you are just.
With multiples, for you are most just

And who is there whom we would accept as judge after you,
Who else after you can we accept as judge?
who would be dear to us—or through whom shall we make ourselves known?
Who can replace you? With whom can we find comfort?

Oh how long we speak of your noble traits
which surpass fragrant musk in nobility and delicacy!
More subtle than fine musk, gentler than the softest breeze

Our master, judge of judges, of piety and knowledge bountiful
piety, abundant learning, and self-restraint,
Of manners refined, devout and kind

faith, unblemished honor, and compassion,
Of faith intact, of generous spirit
self-respect, smiling lips, and graciousness:
Of propriety and charm, eloquence and gentleness

Are these poetic verses whose necklace you have strung
Are these verses of poetry whose strings you tie
to mend my brokenness—or choice and undiluted wine?
To mend my broken heart or shall I despair?

They have indeed honored my standing and raised my rank;
You have honored me and raised my status high
one like you is truly someone through whom honor is gained.
One like you brings honor undoubtedly

Though that richly patterned verse delighted me,
If that order pleased me, so finely crafted
this lingering separation has surely grieved me.
This separation grieves me, prolonged and deferred

Beauty and eminence from Egypt are no wonder:
No wonder Egypt is beautiful and grand
for it is said that Yusuf possessed both qualities in Egypt.
It’s said it combines the beauty of Joseph

You have conducted yourself among us in the manner of Umar,
You walked among us in an Umar-like manner
ennobling glory's ears and adorning them with earrings.
Glorifying the ears of the high and mighty

I marvel at how brief the days of meeting are:
Strange that the days we met were so short
they pass swiftly, flashing away like lightning.
Rushing by like flashes of lightning snatched away

If I do not describe my love for you, it is implicit;
If I don't express my love for you it's concealed within
and they have ruled that pronouns cannot be qualified.
But they say feelings can't be described fully

So go in God's safekeeping: your name is held in esteem,
Go safely with God, your name is good
your honor is preserved, and you are honored.
Your honor protected, and you are exalted

You will replace us with kinfolk and high station,
You will be distracted from us by family and mates
while our recompense in your stead is sorrow and regret.
And we will be consoled for you, despite the sorrow

Yet we hope from God for a return
Still we hope from God you will return
that will gladden one who weeps and revive one wasted by illness.
Bringing joy to the sad and life to the despondent

God may reunite the two who are parted, as a favor
And God may again unite the scattered ones in kindness
and a grace; the Lord of humankind is most gentle toward them.
Grace, for He is gentlest to all people
