On the right-hand side of the dune’s sandy plain stand tents.

We owe them reverence and pledged protection.

I yearn for them every day and night,

Even though my heart bears wounds from them.

For in those tents, near or far, the one I love

Has a dwelling, and a dwelling between my ribs.

And mine is a strange state among lovers:

My heart is a blaze, and my tears stream down.

So, O reproacher, by God, you are not just!

Shall I keep an earlier pledge and yet be blamed?

Protect me from the reproach that stirred my anguish,

For I deem forgetting love forbidden.

For if you felt what I feel, you would excuse a lover

Whose foe is separation, whose creditor is passion.

I remembered nights at Salʿ and Ḥājir,

And days of closeness, when wine was wine—

Wine of mystery, not wine of the vine.

Do the noble drink of the daughter of vines?

And when the breezes of union revived our hearts,

While we were wakeful and the talebearers slept.

So who will help a heart that doves have reminded

Of days of union? Their breaking of the fast is fasting.

My heart’s beloved ones, my heart is indeed your guest,

And a guest of the noblest can never be wronged.

Ask, you two, about a heart that never forgot, but slipped away:

Arrows from the bow of separation struck it.

The dwelling, since you left it, is desolate,

Like the desolation of a scabbard whose keen sword is gone.

Peace be upon you—how sweet is union with you!

And the utmost one of scant means can offer is a greeting.
