O master who has visited his servant!

And it is no marvel for a master to walk to a servant.

You have been so gracious that I cannot adequately thank you for what

you have done; my utmost effort cannot suffice.

And I believe it is I who am in his presence,

owing to his eminence, not he who is in mine.

There, it would have suited me better to stay silent and

listen intently, neither repeating nor offering anything.

For am I anything but a drop from your clouds,

even if, in grammar, you were like a solitary mountain?

I sweated with shyness in your presence, distracted

by your excellence from fine discussion and critique.

Yet my trust in your forbearance urged me

to attempt some discussion, with strain and effort.

    ولولا حيائي كنتُ أبدعتُهُ جهدي

    And I offered a discussion whose varied aspects pleased you;

and but for my shyness, I would have crafted it as brilliantly as I could.

And a bashful face is no trait of the wolf,

but it belongs to the nature of the rose-hued lion (al-Wardi).
