ياO دارُhouse كمْhow many حلَّكِdwelt in you أقمارُmoons
فأينَso where سكانُكِyour inhabitants ياO دارُhouse
O house, how many moons have dwelt in you!
Oh home, how radiant you were
Where, then, are your inhabitants, O house?
Where are your dwellers now, o home?
أهلُكِyour people إنْif حلَّواthey settled وإنْand if سارواthey departed
همْthey جنَّةُthe garden الفردوسُParadise والنارُand the Fire
Your people, when they stay and when they depart,
Whether they settled or traveled on
Are the garden of Paradise and the Fire.
They are paradise and hellfire both
فرَّقَناparted us الدهرُtime وقدْand indeed كانَwas ليfor me
فيin الدارِthe house أوطانٌhomes وأوطارُand desires
Time has parted us, and I once had
Time has scattered us though once
Homes and desires in the house.
In that home we all belonged
فمدمعيso my tears مِنْfrom حينthe time فارقتُهُمْI parted from them
جاريflowing وقلبيand my heart لهمُto them جارُa neighbor
So my tears, ever since I parted from them,
Since we parted my tears still flow
Flow, and my heart is their neighbor.
My heart forever feels their loss
