May God show me your face at every moment,

With an ever-smiling mouth and a radiant brow.

And may He soften your hard heart for tears

That stain my right hand whenever I wipe them away.

For how many precious tears of mine

Have grown cheap for the precious pearls of your smile!

Will you gladden me with the sweetness of union? No!

For among lovers there is none but the sorrowful.

When, before you, did I see a gazelle in human form

Whose glances hunt lions in their lair?

    فما يُبقي عليَّ ولا يقيني

    So sheath the sword of your glance, for it is keen;

For it neither spares me nor protects me.

From whom can I seek help against you? Is there

A wise helper for one who seeks aid?

I have wasted away; whoever visits me does not find me,

And nothing guides him to me but my moaning.

I live enslaved by love and die an ardent lover,

And am resurrected a lover, a sworn ally of longing.

I guarded my heart against love for a time,

And did not know that you were lying in ambush.
